Basic Rights Provided by the United States Constitution

 

The first ten amendments of the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights were instituted in 1791 and were created to guarantee individual rights to average citizens. These rights were established to prevent state and federal government from denying individuals specific freedoms. Since these amendments were written over 200 years ago, they have evolved over the years to cover issues that did not exist when they were written.

Most people do not really understand their constitutional rights, and there are always exceptions. Not knowing or fully understanding your rights can cause many problems and even result in your loss of the rights.

 

The United States Supreme Court has ruled that the rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution apply to everyone within the borders of the U.S. even if their presence here is unlawful. Even undocumented immigrants are entitled to many of the basic rights that American citizens have including privacy, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, etc.
